There is no such hard-core security guard training or expertise needed to become a Security Guard. Only some basic knowledge and basic security training would do. With a simple certificate II in security operations, one can enter the security industry as a security guard without the need for hard and fast rule of earning a high degree diploma.

Types of Security Guard Training

As mentioned above no such intense training is required, but an essential skill and understanding of the functionalities of the security world are needed. The training needed to become a Security Guard also varies along with the requirements of the employer and the value of the goods that the one is guarding.

If the job is to guard an ordinary shopping mall or any departmental store with a low degree of risk, then only some studies and skills would work, but if the job is to safeguard some important place as like a museum or a diamond shop then a licensure is required as an armed security. Some preventative measures are necessary to determine the inappropriate and illegal actions of the culprit by maintaining a high visibility presence usually by watching CCTV footages, simply by patrolling or by using electronic bug detection techniques or alarm systems.

The Security guards at venues such as nightclubs, ranches, and concerts, etc. need to be physically very fit and vigorous as they mainly do the job of a bouncer or doorman as they need to provide security and act against the aggressive behavior of the customers and non-compliance to any rule. The Security Guard for an armored car also needs to be very skilled as the armored van or truck is used to transport large quantities of money especially for banks and retail companies. Depending on the requirements some require a moderate degree of training as Unarmed Security while some require stringent training requirements with Concealed Handgun License.

For Unarmed security guard training, no formal education is required beyond a matriculation. According to the American Society for Industrial Security International, a course instruction of about 48 hours is sufficient for Unarmed Security. Though this much is sufficient yet the company policies and the state laws also play a vital role in the length of the training imparted to the security guards.

On the other hand, an armed professional undergoes a longer period of training as compared to the former one. He has to be well equipped with arms; hence, a proper understanding of safely operating handguns and rifles is needed. He has to be well trained in making arrests and has to undergo a course on fire safety. He is likely to undergo a licensing exam to make sure that he has understood the functionalities well.
